Olive Pact was created to protect the ancient olive trees of Calabria. You can help us get started with a small contribution: in return, you will immediately receive Edward Lear's travel journal in Calabria, in Italian, English or German, and, if you wish, your name in the founders' register.
In the summer of 1847 Edward Lear, landscape painter and former author of the "Book of Nonsense", walked across the tip of Calabria with an English friend and a local guide. He slept in the homes of his hosts, sketched perched villages, forests and riverbeds, and jotted down everything in a journal full of curiosity and irony. He also writes about the olive trees: endless, tall, grey woods with twisted trunks covered in moss.
This edition features the complete text in modern language, Lear's fifteen restored plates, a travel map, the day-by-day itinerary and a glossary. The original journal is in the public domain: the new edition, curation and translations are ours.
